Power of Attorney

A power of attorney is a document or agreement that gives a person (the attorney-in-fact) the right to act on behalf of another person (the principal).

In short, it means that the person who receives the power of attorney can:

• Sign documents.
• Represent someone in dealings with authorities, companies, or banks.
• Carry out specific tasks, such as selling a car or collecting mail.

The power of attorney can be:

• Limited to a specific matter.
• General, which gives the right to handle several types of affairs.

To avoid misunderstandings, a power of attorney should clearly state:

• Who is giving the power of attorney.
• Who is receiving the power of attorney.
• What the power of attorney covers.
• How long it is valid.
