Legal guardian

A legal guardian is a person appointed by the district court to help someone who has difficulty managing their finances, taking care of their rights, or making important decisions. This can, for example, involve paying bills, applying for benefits, or representing the person in contact with authorities.

A legal guardian is not an employee, but a volunteer who has a legal responsibility to act in the best interest of the person in need of help. The person receiving help retains their right to make their own decisions – unlike a trustee, who can make decisions on behalf of the person.
